Humble beginnings
From the very beginning of all my years at Northern Illinois University throughout the 70’s, all I really wanted to be was a studio potter. I don’t know… there’s just something about the “possibility creating” quality of clay that draws you in and sets you free inside. Perhaps it was just a carryover from a more organic hippy style of living back then. Yet, whatever it was, I knew I was hooked for life, and even though there were other occasional ventures far removed from clay working to experience, I always considered myself a potter and always had to “come back home” to the peace that I always found in clay.
Northern Illinois University had a great ceramic program in those days and I learned technical glaze calculation from the best. At that time it never occurred to me to actually advise or troubleshoot the situation of other folks, but as time went on I began to see too many frustrated clay artists out there and realized that I was actually in a position to begin doing some good in unexpected ways…
“See a need… fill a need.”
I have spent the last 26 years in the field of ceramics, many of those years working as a ceramic support technician for a major ceramic supplier. It was at this point I began to see the very real need ceramic art teachers and clay enthusiasts had for easy to understand, down to earth ceramic advice on everything from clay, to glaze application and kiln firing. Thus the idea for this web site was born from the first hand knowledge I gained of the difficulties ceramic teachers, and clay enthusiasts run into in their ceramic programs and projects every day.
The vision
So you see, this web site really has been created for YOU. My hope is that this site will become an indispensable ceramic community resource center where ceramic art teachers and clay enthusiasts can find answers to questions, gain insights to problems and share their own special understanding of ceramics with others.
The Pledge
My pledge to you is to constantly strive to make this web site the perfect resource for your ceramic program. I am continually adding on and making improvements to the site with plans to eventually include a ceramic forum, newsletters, tons of free articles and, in the future, guides available in hard copy form as well as CD-ROM.
I’ve got to tell you, knowing first hand how difficult it can be to work in ceramics and try to support a family I really understand how important it is to keep all expenditures WAY DOWN! For that reason I pledge to keep the prices low so that everyone can afford to benefit from all that is offered. Of course, such an idea sounds crazy in today’s commercial world, but at least in this case it’s quite true!
A Humble Request
All I ask is that you please honor my honest attempt to truly help others succeed in their ceramic success by not copying and giving away the e-book guides to others, but instead directing your friends and colleagues to this web site to get their own copy from this site. Thank you so much, my friend, and know that I am wishing you the greatest success in all that you do!
